I have dedicated one laptop (Macbook2.1 with Libreboot) for photography. I
have Parabola there instead of Trisquel, so this advice might not apply.
Here's what I use:
- for photo tagging, organizing and modifying: darktable
- for touching single images (both RAW and jpg): rawtherapee
Gimp is quite alright. It's not Photoshop and doesn't claim to be.
As I know good Darktable is good libre software for photography

GIMP has a lot of features, but it is impossible to use. GIMP has the most
awful UI I ever seen. It requires a lot of configuration to make it be
something similar like Photoshop.
