Maybe that helped somehow?
I see no way in which the kernel version could make a difference here.

You can
Youtube-dl is now working again. I didn't follow any of the newer
instructions above. But if I remember rightly, I did upgrade to a newer
version of the Linux kernel since I last tried. Maybe that helped somehow?

As I said, it sounds amazing. I will definitely have to try it. In fact, I
have an upcoming need for it, as I am planning to install the latest KDE
desktop from the Debian Sid repos to try
I will attend the meeting next Friday thanks
Okay; make it so. There are weekly developer meetings in #trisquel-dev on
irc.freenode.net each Friday.
You can, of course, remove whatever you want - it's your system. It is still
a good idea to leave the old kernel there in case there's something wrong
with the new one. While that may not happen very often (as you say "without
encountering problems") there's always a possibility. There's no r

Many times I gave up on "cleaning" my packages because I had no clue about
what/when/how I had installed some exploratory stuff. There was no world

I see on Wikipedia that two institution helps Trisquel project.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trisquel I'll be happy to join Trisquel project
for Linux-libre kernel service ( rebootless update and hardening/security and
some kernel modules such as networking-subsystem ) and Server support.
This is amazing! I'm old school, I just 'cat /var/log/apt/history.log', and
look for the dates when I was installing the packages.
I have been recently updating my old notebook HP510 and via terminal I have
been removing contextually the old kernel before rebooting with the latest,
without encountering problems.
In your case, this might do the job: sudo ppa-purge -s deb.nodesource.com -o
node_8.x -p dists -d xenial
ppa-purge will let you know about what it is intending to do anyway.

The situation wouldn't be much better on other fixed-release distros, even
those that are currently up-to-date. They will quickly fall behind in their
versions of youtube-dl and incompatibilities be
I would try it and replace the respective options according to the name of
the /var/lib/apt/lists file:

Will that work if it's a deb repository not a PPA (not sure either way). The
URI is: https://deb.nodesource.com/node_8.x
I might try:
sudo ppa-purge [options] [/ppaname]

Many issues reported about youtube-dl have their fix related to using
python3.

I'll try youtube-dl on my test install of that.
I added a https://deb.nodesource.com/node_8.x repository to install some npm
stuff we were using at a hackathon. I no longer need any of that stuff, and
I'd like to purge all packages installed from those repos and remove them.
But I can't remember which packages I installed.
