Neat, but looks complex to set up. Also, without subscribable lists like
Adblock Plus has, it won't be anywhere near as effective and accurate.
Finally, I'm not convinced that this is a full answer, mostly because I don't
really understand it.

I just posted a comment there. I thought Glynn Moody was pretty strong FLOSS
advocate, but I dunno. He seems there to be totally all about GitHub, which
is proprietary.
I think the one problem is incompatibility. People need to use GPL compatible
licenses and just stop using the others
The entire premise of this question makes too many assumptions about how
economics works. Economics is not the specific model of pay-for-access that
you have come to know. There are tons of other economic models.
Think of it this way: there is a certain amount of essential resources in the
Free Software does not conflict with trademarks. This is Free. Naming rights
are NOT an essential freedom, period.
