I would advice trying
sudo startx
And see what happens.
Try apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade .

Yes, I did see the option to upgrade. However:

Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and see if you get a tty login prompt.
Can TTY be accessed before user access? Login doesn't produce anything but
the black screen.
So: not that I can tell. (But again, neophyte).

GNU/Linux and Trisquel Neophyte here. I have Trisquel Mini running alongside
LMD Mate, on an old Dell Inspiron 1520.
Just recently I booted up Trisquel - which has been running without a hitch -
