If it is it certainly happened at a very unfortunate time. Like probably most here, I remember reading stories about samsung uefi laptops getting bricked by linux but I'm assuming that simply switching from uefi to bios mode and net-installing wouldn't cause a freeze like I've described?

Further to my second question...the error message given when I try to boot from the netinstall disc is Machine check error. I expect it's related a some bios setting, but quite which one I don't know.

hmm machine check error I think might be the one related to the wifi card. Quick search should reveal an answer for sure. I don't believe this specific feature classifies as what would be refereed to as restricted boot. Restricted boot is something that prevents you from easily booting other
