Sorry, I'm not sure how. I use i3lock-color[1] instead of
mate-screensaver.

If anyone else sees this and is interested I followed the steps of user
stethewwolf and edited the image located at /usr/share/backgrounds/flidas.jpg
which solved it :)

I got it to change the background of the loading screen when shutting down,
but it's the same Flidas artwork when turning on haha, peculiar.
