GNUSpeach isn't a competitor to orca; they are different things. Orca is a screen reader; GNUSpeach is a synthesis engine. Over on the orca mailing list, there is some discussion of supporting this engine for use with the screen reader. Thanks for your suggestion! -Dave

The first official release just came out. If actually implemented as part of a screen reading system, it could provide truly awesome speech. Orca's currently at the Microsoft Sam stage of shittiness when it comes to speech... as are basically all text-to-speech things right now.

Oh, okay. I didn't know that. Well, in that case it would really help to test with a total newbie. I know that there is a community for blind GNU/Linux users (http://leb.net/blinux/). That would maybe be a good place to ask.
