I'm also having trouble with updates when I'm using the live usb version.

I already posted this to the mailing list, but just for documentation:
The solution I proposed to Terry-Slipknot was to remove any entry of
"universe" from the /etc/apt/sources.list file, as this repository does not
exist with Trisquel. Then run apt-get update.

I founded too but in a rather different way, the removal of the "universe"
word did not help me.
I deleted the content of "/etc/apt/sources.list" and then run "gksu
software-properties-gtk" and check the repository's and the updates I want.
The sources.list should look something like:
deb htt
resolved !
I just remove in /etc/apt/sources.list the universe word !

I recently had the same problem. For some reason the universe repository
(which does not exist) had been added to the /etc/apt/sources.list file.
Remove the "universe" entry and run apt-get update, and you should be
fine.
