As long as an issue doesn't cause serious damage in a stable release, I
wouldn't backport API changes.

If you feel, that you want to offer a version with API breakage, you could do
so by creating a separate branch like
http://hg.tryton.org/proposed-updates/2.8/.
But I doubt that it will justify the time and effort.
