I have tried to install the Tortoise SVN client to my Win7Pro but it warned
for incompatibility with Vista/7. Do you recommend any other client or
should I ignore the warning?

As far as I know: no.
Use TortoiseSVN or any other SVN client to checkout the whole branch.
If TortoiseSVN doesn't work on your system (strange !) then try with
subversion command line tool.
