First off, thanks for the reply.
I have these extensions loaded:
Taskcenter
sys_action
vd_backendnews
I can create categories and news (records are created in the sysfolder), but
they don't show up in the task center news pane!
Thanks for any advice on this.

Hi A,
I don't know which parts you find not-working, but I know some parts of
the task center (like sys_messages) aren't in the core installation any
more. So you have to import them like any other extension.

I downloaded the typo3 version 4.1.1. I noticed that I needed more
extensions to gee the task center working, so I went to the
www.typo3.org/extensions and imported the following extensions:
sys_messages
sys_notepad
sys_todos
sys_workflows
taskcenter_modules
taskcenter_recent
taskcenter_rootlist
