On this issue I totally agree, but AFAIK it is not possible atm.
Look at extensions that extend tt_news, they all build the xml from
scratch.

For a project I need to extend a current extension. It requires me to
add fields to the current flexform xml. I looked everywhere but cannot
find how to do it. Now I have to copy the entire xml and append my extra
fields. I feel this shouldn't be the way of doing this.

to a PHP file. Everything was all right, until some day I tried to change
the file reference and it simply doesn't have effects (still shows on FE the
