We have our own dedicated server and have total access to the configuration,
so I'm flexible in that respect.
I'll be coming back to this problem in a few days so I'll update this thread

I have a page that has two tt_news Content Elements: List (as a menu) and
Single. Works fine but the current article shown in the single element
always disappears from the list element. I need it to be shown and, if
possible, marked (bold or something).

I updated the local extension file - it shows:

But I am unable to import new extensions because the list is empty.

Yeah, that was Apache configuration issue: on hosting server it always
include (first) it's own rewrite rules, which interfered with RealURL rules,
moved to another server, cleaned up the stuff - works as doctor
prescribed ;)
