I finally got it working: since it was a clean install anyway, I throw
everything away and started over, this time I ran the 1-2-3 installer to make
sure all steps.
Until 4.7, it was enough to set up the source & dummy package, create a database

Might be an SQL error as well. This is a more generic error message.

I checked, but the field is correctly set to

I still don't have a clue why this is silently failing.

"http://repositories.typo3.org/mirrors.xml.gz"; I thank i had the same problem
on a clean install the the field was set to the local file system.
