I would recommend to upgrade to 4.5 first and check the deprecation log.
4.6 removed a lot of deprecated API, which can break some of your
extensions.
You could skip 4.6 and then go to 4.7.
If you're lucky, 4.4-4.7 can work, but there's by far no
Core will usually work but your extensions might not. Try to update all of them
first and than check like steffen said the deprecationlog and fix or disable or
replace the mentioned extensions by other ones with no deprecation entries.
Than the update usually works so our experiences.

Hard to say. It really depends on how much deprecated code your extensions use.
We recently upgraded from 4.4.5 to 4.5.12 and then 4.7.1 with only minor
problems
