this cleanup should be part of a single patch, but since i'm not
confident i can do it properly, i will simply explain.

  before configure and build:

$ git status
On branch master
Your branch is up-to-date with 'origin/master'.
nothing to commit, working directory clean
$

  next:

$ make sandbox_defconfig
$ make cross_tools
...
$ git status
On branch master
Your branch is up-to-date with 'origin/master'.
Untracked files:
  (use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed)

        tools/_libfdt.so
        tools/libfdt.py
        tools/libfdt_wrap.c

nothing added to commit but untracked files present (use "git add" to track)
$

  then after doing a real cleaning:

$ make distclean
$ git status
On branch master
Your branch is up-to-date with 'origin/master'.
Untracked files:
  (use "git add <file>..." to include in what will be committed)

        tools/libfdt.py
        tools/libfdt_wrap.c

nothing added to commit but untracked files present (use "git add" to track)
$

  all this suggests a more thorough cleaning, and some entries added
to tools/.gitignore, which i will leave to someone higher up the food
chain.
