Thanks for opening the OOo bug.
You're right that the crash isn't caused by the red underline
attribute. But there is a problem with using getAttributeRun versus
the older getAttributes in the Text interface. Here's a bug report
with stack trace of the crash in gedit.

what sort of tweaks are required. For example, could these tweaks be
attempted by end-users or do they absolutely need developers or what?
