Using gedit use ctrl-o to select a file to open. I see no place to type a
file name and when I start trying to work through the varios lists to
select a file gedit crashes. No errors on screen. Is there a place I can
look to see if it is logging an error elsewhere?

Just found a partial answer. In dmesg I see a segfault for gedit. Along
with several segfaults on unit-panel-service.
