also you might want to checkout the latest clearlooks in dapper..
creating sexy scrollbars are now an option in gtkrc just look at the
new default clearlooks theme

Well, I dunno anything about themeing gtk, but I believe you can mix
several theme engines in the same theme, so you could put pixmap
scrollbars and make them look however you want them to look.
