On cut down distribution: Go to distrowatch.com and take a look. I would recommend checking out Vector linux as well. It was extreemly cut down and ran very well. Else if you really need to go cutdown DSL (damnsmalllinux) could be the way to go. But you need to define if you are talking cutdown
