My only experience with Linux in school/uni was at tafe. The teachers
let me install Ubuntu on a number of desktop machines in several rooms,
as long as it was dual boot and I told them the password. I had better
network access than the windows systems (although they did eventually

plug in the modem, network manager pops up a configuration dialogue,
select provider, give login details, click connect and you're online.

Not at all, I've done that numerous times when swapping distro's, you
don't even need to delete anything, just jump straight into the install
and let it reformat the partition (and make sure it's not formatting
the /home partition!).

What kind of modem is it? If it's a USB modem it should be pretty much
plug and play. At least it is with my 3 mobile broadband; plug it in,
answer a few questions about the account, and you're online.
