I can't really say what you're problem here might be, but skype doesn't play
too well with pulseaudio, especially not on Hardy. On Intrepid I have skype
installed through the medibuntu repos and it all works perfectly

I've also found that totem-gstreamer (the default in ubuntu) doesn't display
menus, but totem-xine does.
A "sudo apt-get install totem-xine" should do that.

fine for use on the amd64 system though, so
if you have that on a separate partition you shouldn't need to wipe that.
