I have made some progress with this Internet modem (but I'm not there
yet).
Firstly I established the current sierra modem driver version in each of
my two computers using the terminal command: 'modinfo sierra'
PC1 with 10.04LTS: v1.3.8
PC2 with 12.04LTS: v.1.7.16
I then referred to the Sierra
: 12.04LTS and the Telstra 4G mobile wireless modem (Geoffrey)

just a stupid question as I may have missed the beginning of this
thread. But did you get the modem from Big Pond or from Telstra? You may
say that these are the same company, but I have found that if you get
the modem directly from Telstra the APN to use may be telstra.internet

Further to my previous message: On Telstra's advice I checked the memory
card inside the 4G modem. It is titled 'BIGPOND' which means the APN
name is 'telstra.bigpond'. This is the same as I have been using with
the old BP3-EXT modem for which a connection name appears in the menu.

broadband which I must use in my location. Those familiar with this
modem will know that it works on 3G as well and on all bands
(850/1800/2500 MHz). There is no 4G on the Sunshine Coast, QLD.
My plan/location uses 3G and 850 MHz
