Dont forget that the S2 also has kies via wifi on the handset.
It starts a web page that all of this can be managed via.

OTA is over the air, this is for upgrading the firmware
without the use of a PC (read Kies)

I don't think Kies is actually necessary for much. Only thing it might be
for is firmware updates, but S2 should come with 2.3 Android which has
over-the-air self-update functionality. Otherwise, Ubuntu by default covers
all of the needs of media sharing - something Windows doesn't, which is why
