Dave, As an example configuring a 3G modem (Sierra aircard 880U) with network manager in Ubuntu does not work, same with the 3G modem supplied by Virgin Mobile.
The process is supposed to be simple however the Network Manager in Ubuntu did not work for the above. It does recognize a Virgin Mobile 3G modem but the modem will not connect to the internet. To get Ubuntu to recognize the Telstra Sierra aircard 880U is almost an impossibility. Some times there have been a few hoops to jump through. One of the most frustrating things is the way ubuntu seems to regularly regress usb modem drivers, which is very frustrating.
