I've tried to verify that the new libprotobuf works with the old
libcompizconfig (by running ccsm and changing a few settings). I've also
rebuilt libcompizconfig against the new libprotobuf. That build
succeeded, and ccsm seems to still work under that version of
libcompizconfig as well.

protobuf-c only exists in Karmic.
libcompizconfig only build-deps on libprotobuf-dev in Jaunty/Karmic.
I'll try to test that.
None of the other binary packages have any build-deps or deps in Jaunty.

This sounds like something that should be SRU'ed vs. backported. I'm
marking the backporting tasks invalid for now. If the SRU teams feels
