The open-source ATI driver doesn't have this problem; it's only a
problem with the proprietary ATI driver, so it's a problem that the
Ubuntu developers cannot solve (and the same goes for the X developers).
It might therefore be worth raising the bug directly with AMD if you are
experiencing it. I
I think it's more like 2 years the problem is that it was working before and
then it broke. What I don't understand is that I know it's not uncommon to
use compiz and vnc at the same time.

I don't understand how the most user friendly Linux distribution in the
world can have such a fundamental problem for *four years*.

Enabling hardy-backports and updating debhelper (only) allowed
cppcheck_1.40-1.dsc to build for me.
cppcheck_1.44-1.dsc does *not* build with the following error:
dpkg-source: error: Unsupported format of .dsc file (3.0 (quilt))
I'll try the cppcheck 1.40 package and see how it goes.

OK, I've tried to build cppcheck for Hardy myself from
cppcheck_1.40-1.dsc (Lucid), and I'm being thwarted by the requirement
for debhelper >= 7 (hardy provides debhelper 6).
So, this means that a backported cppcheck would therefore also require
the backported debhelper (7) from hardy-backports?
