I have a backport in *ppa:dirk-computer42/c42-backport* for saucy.
This backport needs also a backported libpostproc due to the libav
backport in this ppa.
The precise backport is currently failing on an unsatisfied (and not
well defined) dependency to samba:

Public bug reported:
Please backport vlc 2.1.1-1 (universe) from trusty to saucy.
Reason for the backport:
The whole lot of reasons including hardware accelerated decode.
