Public bug reported:

Many universities (including the one where I work) have built small
clusters using (K)Ubuntu 6.06 LTS in order to teach Parallel Processing.
Previously, people were using LAM/MPI (http://www.lam-mpi.org/) in order
to program applications using the Message-Passing paradigm. Since then,
the LAM/MPI makers have written "LAM/MPI is now in a maintenance mode.
Bug fixes and critical patches are still being applied, but little real
"new" work is happening in LAM/MPI. This is a direct result of the
LAM/MPI Team spending the vast majority of their time working on our
next-generation MPI implementation -- Open MPI."

OpenMPI (http://www.open-mpi.org/) is the new standard for Parallel
Processing and it is unfortunate that a package for that does not exist
in 6.06 LTS.

I am therefore asking whether it is possible to backport openmpi from,
say, Feisty to Dapper? I am willing to help as I will need openmpi badly
in a few weeks.

Thanks.
