Cool, I built my own frankenstein'ed vlc 0.8.6 package and can attest
VLC 0.8.6 builds and works on Edgy, and also attest that the recent
official Ubuntu upload builds and runs too.

At this point, yes, I am willing to research and consider a gaim
backport more closely. The extensions are the main roadblock, which ones
need backporting, which ones won't backport ,etc. But I've also been
running a gaim prevued from feisty or sid for a month or so now.

Kernel modules aren't easy to backport, expecially being a part of
linux-restricted-modules, and are out of the scope of the Backporters.
There are repositories out there with the latest nvidia-glx drivers.
Perhaps use one of those?

yes, unfortunately that is quite insane... We've talked about it a bit
before but for now kernel backports are not appropriate.
May I suggest contacting a kernel developer about backporting the sky2
fix to Edgy's kernel?
