I'd suggest installing it from a PPA.
I've been using this one for several months without any problems:

Great! I've just installed Gimp 2.8 from laney's PPA
https://launchpad.net/~laney/+archive/ppa
It installs and and runs perfectly so far. I'm happy to help with some of the
dependency testing when I have more time later in the week :-)
