Well, what you can do in that case is to download the modemmanager
package from here first: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/modemmanager
(i386 or amd64). Then if the test fails, you will be able to revert by
running in a terminal dpkg -i modemmanager_xxx.deb without a network
connection.

There is a tool called ppa-purge to remove a ppa with its packages. As
this is a backport of only modemmanager, it is not very likely that it
will affect other types of connections like wifi.

Precise is a LTS release, and support and bugfixes for a lot of new modems
are only added to 0.6 versions.
