Thirded; PostgreSQL 8.4 contains significant improvements for developer
and DBA friendliness.
There already is a PPA by Martin Pitt that can be used with jaunty and hardy:

Martin Pitt is the original maintainer of the PostgreSQL packages in Ubuntu.
I also believe that PostgreSQL is very important for many Ubuntu users
and should be updated. As Clusty already stated above running a beta OS
or compiling the sources isn't exactly a solution.
