Forgot to say, the backport of mediawiki now requires a backport of
source package mediawiki1.7, too.
Sorry for the hassle :)

1.7 from Feisty successfully backports to Dapper. This version is suitable for
Backports. Is that OK?

Looks like both the 1.5 and 1.7 packages are listed under unstable at
debian now. I'm confused how these could be unstable, but I haven't
tested them either. Well since they're both unstable, we might as well
get a 1.7 package going for edgy eh?

Is there any chance of a later version being backported into dapper? If
you can tell me that it won't be in the next 6 months or so, then I'll
go compile it from source for my own use, but I'd really rather prefer
there to be an official package.

Unstable, in the context of Debian, isn't being used to imply that a
package is unreliable or something, it means the repositories themselves
are unstable, ie. packages are updated often. Of course, it follows
from this that the unstable repos will have more bugs than the more
stable repositories,
This bug is still valid, with the current version being 1.8.1, and
1.4.14 (provided by Ubuntu) no longer supported.

Mediawiki 1.5.8 is in Edgy as package mediawiki1.5
See http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/edgy/web/mediawiki1.5
Although 1.6 or 1.7 would be *nice* since 1.5 is in edgy, is it possible
to backport this to Breezy?

Ashar Voultoiz (one of the MediaWiki developers) pointed me to a Debian
package for MediaWiki in testing:
http://packages.debian.org/testing/web/mediawiki1.5
Apparently the packagers are also working on packaging 1.6. Is it
possible that the Debian package can be used on ubuntu?

Not for backporting. Only packages in the development release of Ubuntu
are eligible for backports. However, if it's in Debian, it has a good
chance of being in Edgy soon :)

Current Edgy version is still 1.4.14-1ubuntu1. Re-open this bug when a
newer version hits Edgy.
