I'll try that. But how can I recover my installation - or at least save my
files so that I can reinstall Ubuntu?

Hello Slaven,
Let's try another routine just before reinstalling the system.
Step 1:
--
Select recovery mode in GRUB while booting. If Ubuntu is the only OS and
don't show the GRUB by default, press ESC during boot.
Step 2:
-
Select root shell from the item menu.
Step 3:

If you cannot see any boot menu during System Startup then please keep
pressing 'Esc' key during bootup time after the Startup Logo disappears.
You will have your GRUB menu then and select your
kernel.(recovery mode) from there.
Then go through the commands that Shabab
correct me if im wrong but for grub2 its the shift key.

Another Correction, the Step 3, Command 1 should be 'sudo sudo
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg' (wirh one sudo only). Sorry for this
unintended typo.

of fixing things so that I don't lose the files I already have?
Thanks,

Yesterday I messed with my graphics drivers in Ubuntu 10. When I restarted the
PC, it briefly showed the Ubuntu loading screen and then went black. And then
it is stuck. I'd like to restore my graphics settings without having to
reinstall everything. How can I do that?
Thanks,
Slaven
Dear Slaven
Which graphics card do you have and which driver software you have tried for
it? What was the command that you excuted to install and configure the
driver.
