Actually I also spoke too soon. There are still freezes. The machine
seems to boot fine but often won't shutdown without keypresses to help
it along. Also the sound regularly gets stuck in a loop unless you keep
up constant activity like moving the mouse.

It doesn't seem to be noted elsewhere in this bug, but the fix is just
to disable gesture support for mixed mode (relative and absolute at the
same time) devices. The only mixed mode device I'm aware of is the magic
mouse. With this new grail package, X will fail to open grail for the
magic mouse.
See below a screenshot of what occurs when compiz is enabled in Maverick
beta : the eog window is oversized, thus one cannot see the bottom of
the picture nor its status bar. It happens with all pictures that do not
fit the screen and have to be resized by eog.
Should I file a bug against Compiz
Maybe the Toshiba is a different problem. I have updated my original bug
638434 accordingly. I had high hopes for the above fix but unfortunately
it's not the answer in my case.

I'm using a Lucid cups backport to Hardy having the same issue. I
rebuild my backport with --enable-debug and got a useful backtrace. I
have a VM, with a reproducible test case.
