It appears that /usr/lib/klibc/bin files aren't dynamic executable but
are statically linked. Since prelink aids dynamic linking by linking in

As I had just installed the 11.10 using the same USB stick with success,
instead of getting another stick I just reloaded the most recent 12.04
installer image made a startup disk and what do you know: the problem(s)
are gone now - not sure what has changed, but this bug can be closed.

The patch on the upstream bug that fixes this issue is included in
gstreamer0.10 which is now in Precise.
So, in theory that should fix this issue. Please re-test and reopen
this bug report if the issue is not solved.

The problem sounds a lot like a concurrency issue, but at least booting with
SMP disabled did not help the problem in the slightest. Also it does not matter
whether you suspend with or without X, so I don't think it's the display driver
either.
As the problem seems to be present in all distros,
Angus - is this still an issue with 3.2 and 3.3 kernels ? If so, I'll
see if I can get your patch upstreamed.
