Tive problemas na hora do boot do live cd no meu notebook hp,
congelava no meio, sem eira nem beira... fuçando na internet, descobri
uma dica que funcionou no meu caso. Altere os parâmetros
de uma olhada em system | administration | restricted drivers (ou
sistema | administração | drivers restritos ).
A aceleração 3d da sua placa gráfica tem que estar habilitada para os
efeitos funcionarem.
Agora não imagino porque no seu ubuntu antigo estava funcionando e neste não.
