I made the HWE upgrade on a second machine as described here:

Steam broke on the second machine as well.
It wouldn't even let me install Steam. I had to remove, update, then
install again. Then, once installed, I encountered the Couldn't set up
I just had this one pop up again for the first time since the fix was released.
Using 14.04.2 w/HWE and GNOME 3.12.2 via PPA.

Somehow, the Steam client was removed during the HWE upgrade. This resolved it

have an i7 with the GT435M (which does support Optimus), there is no
integrated chip/Optimus. If I had the i5 this would be a different

Immediately on boot, the backlight is lit. Switching around ACPI
settings doesn't seem to help. Booting into Windows then putting it in a
state of hibernation, the backlights will work upon the next Ubuntu
boot... but only that next boot.
