This turned into a bit of a saga. The guys at HPLIP had no idea what the problem might be and initially suggested that I install HPLIP v1.6.10 from source. I rapidly ran into dependency hell and gave up. The next suggestion was a clean install of Edgy (as I had done a dist-upgrade from Dapper).
