I have the same laptop: it doesn't freeze on Edgy, it just takes some times to complete some tasks at shutdown. On my grub boot options (/boot/grub/menu.lst), I did remove the quiet tags and added vga=791, so that I can monitor the tasks completion, have a more proper framebuffer resolution
