I think this is still a valid bug against Ubuntu package - this
exception should simply be caught and appropriate
I am sorry, but I have given up using Ubuntu and the server has been
decommissioned already; so there is no way for me to reproduce the bug.
Removing myself from bug, as some people reported that affects them as
well.

this bug is about how broken environment (for example, problem with DNS
resolution) breaks the installation process
(when it probably shouldn't).
Did you try to reproduce this bug with a broken DNS resolver? You can use
PowerDNS 3.1.4 to test for this bug

I have run into this recently on one of the Ubuntu servers. However, this does
not seem to be related
to Ubuntu or Debian at all.
The problem is that upstream DNS is running:
$ dig +short chaos txt version.bind.

Can you check, if you have libenigmime.so installed in your browser
components directory?
If not, can you unpack the XPI file and copy the libenigmime.so file
from the XPI to the components? (Global, not your profile)
I've solved a similar problem on the FreeBSD:
The are better drivers for Attansic L1 (0x19691048) available on the
http://atl1.sourceforge.net/.
There is also another card (found on Asus F5R laptop) called Attansic L2
(0x19692048) and the driver is there:
