Obtained the following when attempting to run from the command line:
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

I should note that I'm actually running Xubuntu instead of ubuntu
Also, I tried running totem with the vesa drivers and those seemed to
work. I also tried the 'radeon' driver (open source one) and that
doesn't support cards past the X850 era (currently running on a Mobility
Radeon X1400) so

I don't really have any great insights as to how this occurred. I have
been watching misc. online videos in firefox, when a kdesu pop-up
message appeared to report the problem.
Xorg is running fglrx with 8.36.5 driver. Using KDE as my desktop.

This occurred just as I was starting kde (right after boot-up). The
last time I shut down, I was attempting to play a .mov file in VLC that
it didn't recognise (and seemed to fail to start up properly). I don't
know if these two issues are related.
