I don't think so. The problem you described is rather related to video
memory timing. It look like as if an extra wait state were needed when
the system is accessing video memory directly, where in fact it's
accessing part of system RAM assigned to video. Perhaps it could be
fixed in BIOS

It has definitely been fixed in edgy. Possibly 'fix-released' is meant
to refer to new packages released by kubuntu.org (kde 3.5.4 for dapper)?

save the original entry/entries from the desktop file together with the
changed file. Maybe in the case of an error, check the saved entry with
the one from the desktop file to see, if they changed. In my use case,
the Exec entry saved by alacarte and the original entry (not yet saved)
by alacarte
I'm sorry, this report does not seem to contain the full
/var/log/installer/syslog.
From your later comments, I presume you cannot reproduce this. But if
you can, please feel free to file a new bug.

I'm noticing that a FAT32 hard drive partition I am mounting via
/etc/fstab does not have the problem of (incorrectly) being case-
sensitive. It (correctly) is case-insensitive.

For your modem to work out of the box, the sl-modem-daemon should be in
the installation CD of Ubuntu afaik.
They will most probably close this bug bc the sl-modem-daemon (the
daemon that makes your modem work) cannot be in the Ubuntu CD due to
license issue (daemon has distribution restrictions
