When opening with kmail for example, the mail is not displayed
correctly, but via View -> Set encoding, I can select Arabic
(windows-1256) and it is displayed correctly then.
In Evolution, that encoding entry is missing in View -> Character

Note that the iso is mounted, not a physical CD. also note that I've
tried it both double-clicking the cdromupgrade and running it from the
terminal using the absolute path. Also, I have tried running as root
(sudo) and when I start the install, I choose not to use the network.

Because the traceback of your original bug is identical to all the upstream

Yes, if I do 'killall gnome-panel' it starts up normally without any
problems.
Double correction: I meant that it happens even if I don't have Tracker
Live Search selected in my deskbar configuration. I didn't actually
uninstall libdeskbar-tracker, but I will try that too now.

Happens to me too. It's weird because I've installed the same Ubuntu on my
other laptop and it shuts down just fine.
I'm running an Asus Z63a (Pentium-M 1.73 Ghz 533 MHz FSB, 60Gb Samsung
Spinpoint M HDD)
The other laptop that works fine is an Asus M6Ne (Pentium-M 1.5 GHz 400 MHz
FSB, 80Gb Tosh
It does.
If I'm careful to get the cursor in just the right spot I still see the "thin
red line", so I can still use the panel . It's more of an annoyance than the
problem it was before that discovery!

There is problem with libdeskbar-tracker when you login to your session.
But when you do 'killall gnome-panel' in a terminal you will see it
launches without problem.
The reason the libdeskbar-tracker makes it crash is because deskbar is
launched before the tracker-deamon is executed.

the warning comes from a mistmatch between the filename and the
mimetype, usually those are due to a wrong magic to shared-mime-info.
Feel free to open a bug on shared-mime-info with an example of file
triggering the problem for you.
