just to confirm that I also experienced this with the Beta release.
Adding vga=792 to the appropriate pleces in /boot/grub/menu.lst did the
trick for me.

I wasn't able to reproduce this crash, in fact the Feisty install
crashed in various places, ranging from the mentioned to e.g. not being
able to install Grub (2 different kind of error messages there). I ran
memtest with success and installed Edgy without problems.

I have found a work around so that GAIM and other applications that
communicate via dbus with network-manager-gnome do not get wrong
information (because network-manager-gnome is broken). Simply disable it
from starting up in sessions.

I have had this issue once. Following all the instructions above just
don't work. Then, I solve this simply by add "compiz --replace" into
startup applications.
Here's my stupid case. I forgot to start compiz as session start.

unlike Mary's my laptop was running overnight. Like Mary's it is a
dual-boot with the hardware clock set to local time rather than UTC
