On further testing, the hard drive did indeed have some faulty sectors
on it. The drive was an older 4Gb unit and contained 12 bad sectors.
Once I realized this, and the installer's inability to get past it,

I can confirm the Network Manager Applet does not seems to control the
interface.

It looks like openoffice.org-l10n-ar is no longer in the archive.
openoffice.org-l10n-common should conflict with openoffice.org-l10n-ar
then to hint apt to remove it on the upgrade.
You can work around this by removing openoffice.org-l10n-ar manually
and retry the

To get some progress with this bug, can you download the latest Beta,
and retest? This has a newer version of Squashfs with better error
checking.
