I've got an Acer Aspire 5024 WLMI which is quite the same laptop, excepting the

Yes. The Stack has read/write/execute. I can't find a patch in Gentoo

I'm at a loss. I'm assigning it to ubiquity, as it seems probable that
whatever environmental difference is affecting the keyboard, was
introduced via selections at install time; hopefully someone managing
those bugs will have a better idea what package to forward this to.

I have a pci USB2 / Firewire card (internal hub), because this PCs
motherboard only has USB1 ports natively. The external hard drive that I
mentioned earlier, was hooked up through this PCI card.
I tried the same large transfer again using one of the motherboard USB1
