Could you try launching the application from the terminal and write the
error messages, if any? Or perhaps look for a log file...

Even if this bug-report is quite old, the problem still exists.
I (intel i945gm, ubuntu feisty) had problems with software-rendering
when trying to use breve (http://www.spiderland.org/breve) even when
other OpenGL-apps where hardware accelerated).
There is a forum-entry (started by someone else)
With:
$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux
(ie fully up-to-date Feisty), I get the messages in dmesg but nothing
bad (seems) to happen, nor do I observe the long freeze during boot up.

I think the problem might be i'm using a 64 bit arch machine, i tested
at work, 32 bit machine also with Kubuntu 7.04, and it worked there

I purged kwalletmanager and rebooted, but the bug does not return. I am
still using kmail 4:3.5.6-0ubuntu6. Maybe the temporary switch to
kwalletmanager somehow repaired kmail's password store.
