not sure: It works perfectly on windows and it worked too on Dapper, and I'm
almost sure it worked on the first feisty alphas and/or betas.

I managed to run the version 6.8.2 X server under RHEL 5 which normally
runs the 7.1.1 X server. I got it to go far enough to manifest the SAME
"partial read with zero padding" flakiness that stock RHEL 5, and which

Agree with Petr, this is not about warning but about not functioning
application, they just don't start or crash after a few seconds, look at
the examples above and if someone reports it it should be taken serious

I have this same issue (items 1, 2, and 3 above) on linux-
image-2.6-20-16-lowlatency (I didn't spend any time on -generic). For
fun, I copied the snd-hda-codec.ko and snd-hda-intel.ko modules from
2.6.20-15-lowlatency into 2.6.20-16-lowlatency, and low and behold,
sound worked.

Are you using the binary nvidia driver? If so, then possibly this is
